Glenn Maxwell scored the fastest century in International Cricket Council (ICC) Men's Cricket World Cup history as Australia crushed the Netherlands by 309 runs.

Opting to bat first, David Warner and Steve Smith added 66 in the first powerplay after Mitchell Marsh had departed for nine.

Warner finished with 104 and Smith on 71 while Marnus Labuschagne played his part scoring 62.

But the star among Australian batsmen was Maxwell, who got his ton in just 40 balls, with eight sixes in his innings.

The winning margin of 309 runs is also the largest the tournament has ever seen and the second largest ever in one-day internationals.

"I’ve been pretty crook all day, so I wasn’t really expecting much today," Maxwell said.

"I think with that it probably just freed my head a little bit to be able to just go out there and play.

"The situation I suppose when Davey (Warner) and Greeny (Cameron Green) both got out, meant I had to bat a little bit differently and that actually probably tempered me down a little bit and actually make me play the situation a bit.

"Patty was brilliant out there as well for me."

Dutch bowler Bas de Leede suffered maximum wrath from the Australian attack, conceding 115 runs in his ten overs.

While the Netherlands started the chase brightly, they crumbled for only 90 runs in 21 overs.

Adam Zampa stood out with the ball, with the spinner finishing with figures of four wickets for eight runs from three overs.

The record win means Australia are now fourth in the overall table, with a massive run-rate boost.

The Cricket World Cup continues tomorrow with England taking on Sri Lanka.

Defending champions England are currently one place behind the Lankans in eighth, after losing three of their four games so far.
