The Netherlands claimed their first ever win at a 50-over International Cricket Council Men’s Cricket World Cup after springing a surprise by beating South Africa.

The 38-run victory for the Dutch at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium at Dharamsala in India marked the first time the Proteas were defeated by a non-Test playing nation in a one-day international.

In a match reduced to 43 overs per side due to rain that delayed the scheduled start by two hours, the Netherlands captain Scott Edwards produced an unbeaten 78 in the second half of a Dutch innings that struggled to gain momentum initially.

They were reduced to 82 for five in the 21st over, with all of the top five dismissed for under 20.

Edwards 78 off 69 balls, helped by 29 from Roelof van der Merwe and a late unbeaten 23 off nine balls from Aryan Dutt helped the Netherlands to a competitive-looking score of 245 for eight.

After a good start the South Africa reply was derailed by a spell of four wickets for eight runs in five overs as they slipped to 44 for four.

David Miller gave the Proteas hope with his 43 but when he was bowled by Logan van Beek, who took three wickets for 60 runs, it effectively ended South Africa’s hopes of victory with still 100 runs needed.

Despite some late hitting from Keshav Maharaj, who made 40, South Africa were bowled out for 207 as they suffered their first defeat of the tournament.

Tomorrow’s match sees unbeaten New Zealand, who have won their first three games, facing an Afghanistan side who claimed an upset win against England on Sunday (October 15) in Chennai.
