Athletics competition at Trinbago 2023 here concluded with two thrilling mixed relay races, won by Nigeria and Guyana in Commonwealth Youth Games record times.

In the 4x100 metres, just 0.09sec separated the top three teams.

Nigeria edged the race in 42.68, with England having to settle for silver in 42.71 and hosts Trinidad and Tobago taking bronze in 42.77.

England also narrowly missed out in the 4x400m relay, Guyana taking gold in 3min 22.07sec.

The English team were 0.22 slower, with Australia completing the top three in 3:26.23.

It was a successful evening for Nigeria, who also won both 200m finals.

Faith Okwose triumphed in the women's race, clocking 23.36 to beat compatriot Justina Eyakpobeyan by 0.11 in a similar manner to her 100m victory.

LaNica Locker of Antigua and Barbuda won bronze in 23.56.

Samuel Ogazi doubled up his 400m victory with 200m gold in 21.22, beating Scotland's Dean Patterson by 0.23 and England's Rusciano Thomas-Riley by 0.37.

There was treble success for Kenya on the last night of competition, winning both 3,000m finals and the men's 800m.

Jospat Sang Kipkirui notched 8:03.65 to stave off compatriot Andrew Kiptoo Alamisi by 0.70, with Uganda's Victor Cherotich completing the podium in 8:19.31.

Nancy Cherop dominated the women's 3,000m, posting a time of 9:07.15.

Closest challenger Financia Chekwemoi of Uganda was 18.52 off the pace in second, with England's Eliza Nicholson crossing the finish line at 18.85 adrift.

Kipkirui and Cherop had both won their respective 1500m races.

Kelvin Koech Kimutai provided another gold for Kenya in 1:50.14 in the men's 800m, triumphing in 1:50.14.

England's Miles Waterworth placed second in 1:52.21, with Caleb McLeod of Scotland taking bronze in 1:52.83.

Phoebe Gill won the women's 800m with a Commonwealth Youth Games record of 2:02.30, beating India's Asha Kiran Barla by 2.69 and Fleur Cooper of Australia by 3.56.

There were two golds for Australia on the last day of athletics.

Toby Stolberg and England's Thea Brown both cleared 1.78 metres in the women's high jump, but the Australian athlete had fewer failed attempts throughout the competition and earned gold.

Another Australian in Izobelle Louison-Roe rounded of the top three with a 1.75m clearance.

Jackson Love led an Australian one-two in the men's T38 long jump, achieving 4.86m to the 4.62m of Ori Drabkin and 4.44m of Wales' William Bishop.

South Africa's Willem Schalk Jacobus Jansen was the other gold medallist in a bumper session, dominating the men's javelin throw with a 79.85m effort.

England's Tom Rutter was second with 67.54m, with Arjun Arjun of India taking third with 65.94m.

England topped the athletics medals table at Trinbago 2023 with seven golds, followed by Nigeria with six and Australia, Kenya and South Africa with five.

Guyana and Jamaica earned two golds apiece, with Wales and the Cayman Islands also providing winners.
