Mexico’s 2022 World Games gold medal-winning flag football captain and quarterback Diana Flores has been named the International World Games Association Athlete of the Month for February, and believes the gold medal she won in Birmingham last year could help the sport achieve a place on the Olympic programme for LA 2028.

"There are around 20 million people practising my sport in 100 countries, today it is on its way to being an Olympic sport in Los Angeles 2028," she insisted.

"A bright future awaits the sport, which is inclusive because it gives men and women the same opportunity to develop themselves on the field."

Flores was chosen as the flag ball ambassador for the Run With It commercial, which was shown during the Super Bowl and currently has attracted than 4.5 million views on YouTube.

Speaking about her selection Flores said: "For me this is incredible.

"It opens up more opportunities for boys and girls, for future generations, not only to function on the field, but to achieve their dreams because in Mexico and the United States there are academic scholarships for players."

Flores holds a marketing and communications degree from the Universitario Tecnológico in Monterrey.

She took up the sport at the age of eight and played in a boys team because there were so few female players.

When she was only 16, she became the youngest player to take part in the Flag Football World Cup.

The crowning achievement of her career so far was when she led Mexico to victory over the United States in the World Games in July 2022.

"Every one of us understood that the impact of that gold was way bigger than ourselves and that we were fighting for something bigger," Flores said.

"We were fighting for all these young girls that are coming behind us, that's what really helped us do magic on the field and win that historic gold and make history."

Flag football is one of nine additional sports under consideration by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for inclusion on the programme for Los Angeles 2028.

A decision is expected at the IOC Session in Mumbai, India, which is scheduled from October 15 to 17.
