Triple Olympic champion Teddy Riner of France is in Kazakhstan for a training camp as he is targeting to be fully fit during the home Olympic Games in Paris next year.

Riner, who is also a 10-ime world champion, suffered an ankle injury last year, after which he decided not to participate at the World Judo Championships.

But he did return to training at the end of 2022, with a training session in Japan and has backed it up with a stint in Kazakhstan.

The National Federation of Kazakhstan invited the judoka, who is set to be in the country until January 19.

"France and Kazakhstan co-operate closely in the field of martial arts," a release from the French Embassy in Kazakhstan said.

"Since 2017, Frenchman Tareq Abdesselem has been training the Kazakh karate team, which facilitated their sportsmen winning two bronze medals (Darkhan Asadilov and Sofya Berultseva) at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

"Since last year, the Frenchman Stéphane Traineau, former director of the French judo teams, world champion and Olympic medallist himself, trains the Kazakh national judo team to prepare for the next Olympic Games, which will take place in Paris from 26th July to 11th August 2024."

In the short term, Riner will be hoping to make the most of the camp to prepare for the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Slam in Paris, scheduled to be held from February 4 to 5.

The 33-year-old has seven IJF Grand Slam titles, with the latest coming in July 2022 in Budapest.
