France Judo’s high performance director Larbi Benboudaoud has resigned from his post after claiming French Judo Federation (FFJ) President Stéphane Nomis had taken "a major risk" in sacking the men’s coach.

It comes after last month's decision to remove men's team coach Christophe Gagliano when France failed to win a single medal in the men’s events at October’s World Championships in Tashkent.

Gagliano had been appointed to his position by Benboudaoud.

"I am not against change, but I think that the timing of decisions, eighteen months from the Paris 2024 Games is a major risk," Benboudaoud said in a statement.

Gagliano has been replaced by three-time French champion Baptiste Leroy who had coached Morocco and served as technical director in Mauritius before leading the Etoile Sportive of Blanc Mesnil judo club.

"I am not aligned with the strategy wanted by the President," admitted Benboudaoud as he stood down.

"On this subject we have different positions and visions," conceded Nomis.

"I wanted to bring changes and a new dynamic to the head of the French men's team the day after the World Championships, the team was not performing well.

"I hope that the system will evolve very quickly in view of Paris 2024, but also those of Los Angeles 2028."

He claimed the new appointment would also "give more space to clubs in the high level management.

"It is the continuity of the establishment of the Judo Pro League."

Of the eight medals won by France at Tokyo 2020, only two came in the men’s competition.

Luka Mkheidze won bronze in extra lightweight and Teddy Riner also won bronze in the heavyweight category, while France also won the mixed team event.

France Judo has set a performance target of 10 medals at Paris 2024 but Benboudaoud's successor in the high performance role has not yet been named.

The Olympic judo competition in Paris begins on July 27 2024.
