The Netherlands' men's compound defending champion Mike Schloesser was on top form as he eased through qualifying on the first day of the European Archery Indoor Championships in Laško in Slovenia.

In the two qualifying sessions at the Tri Lilije Sports Hall, Schloesser scored perfect 10s on 59 of his 60 arrows to finish with a score of 599 points.

He is now set to face the lowest ranked of the 32 qualifiers, Gummi Gudjonsson of Iceland in the round of 32 of the main draw

France's Jean Philippe Boulch also impressed with a score of 596 points, while Marco Bruno of Italy notched a 595.

In the women's compound, Russia's Elizaveta Knyazeva top scored with 592, followed by Belgium's Sarah Prieels and Estonian Lisell Jaatma on 589.

In the team compound competitions, France were the best performers on the men's side with 1,773 points, while Russia recorded a 1,759 in the women's event.

Olympic bronze medallist Lucilla Boari of Italy was only the joint-ninth best qualifier in the women's recurve competition as she posted a score of 577.

Ukraine's Polina Rodionova was the best performer with 585 points.

Men's Olympic champion Mete Gazoz of Turkey notched 591 points in the recurve qualifiers, although that was beaten by the 594 from Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Mauro Nespoli and the 592 from France's Rio 2016 silver medallist Jean-Charles Valladont.

Nespoli also helped Italy to top team qualifying with 1,769 points, and Rodionova contributed to Ukraine's top-scoring 1,745 in the women's event.

The barebow discipline made its debut at the Championships, with Oliver Hicks of Britain and Sweden's Leo Pettersson both scoring 553 points in men's qualifying.

Hicks was classed as the top performer by virtues of his 21 10s to the 19 shot by Pettersson.

The top three athletes in women's barebow qualifying were representing Italy, with Cinzia Noziglia posting 541 points, Fabia Rovatti 528 and Laura Turello 502.

Individual eliminations are set to begin at the Championships tomorrow.
