What is it? The International Federation of Muaythai Associations World Championships in Bangkok

When is it? May 4 until May 12

Where is it? The event will be held in one of Bangkok’s most prestigious venues, the five-star convention centre of Central World which will see three rings and over 100 bouts per day broadcast around the world. The outside venue will be transformed into a massive festival ground with over 100 booths and a main stage with daily activities.

Who’s taking part? The event is in conjunction with IFMA’s 30-year celebration and 102 countries have confirmed their participation in this 10-day event, More than 2,000 athletes, coaches and officials are expected to take part.

Why is it important? It will be the first time in history that the two sole recognised muaythai national federations in Thailand, the Amateur Muaythai Association of Thailand and Professional Boxing Association of Thailand, will join forces to co-host the event under the sanctioning of IFMA. The Championships will offer competitors the opportunity to qualify for a number of major events this year. They include the delayed 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou and the 2023 European Games in Kraków-Małopolska, where muaythai will be making its debut. Places at the World Combat Games in Riyadh will also be on offer.

What’s the history? Muaythai has been a part of Thai history and heritage for hundreds of years, as with most traditions from ancient times. Many different versions of the history of Muaythai exist, but all sources agree that Muaythai was the primary and most effective method of self defence used by Thai warriors on the battlefields of conflicts and wars that occurred countless times throughout the history of the nation now known as Thailand. In the early 1930s, Muaythai was officially codified, with rules and regulations being created and introduced into the sporting world, to make Muaythai an international sport of the early 20th century and a safe ring sport. The first IFMA World Championships took place in Bangkok in 1999.

How can I watch it? More than 40 broadcasters, including the Olympic Channel, will broadcast the IFMA World Championships.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act". He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
