Nigeria_World_Cup_under_17_logoJuly 20 - Nigeria's Government has has tried to reassure FIFA that adequate security will be provided for the under-17 World Cup tournament to be held there later this year.

Spokesman Emeka Odikpo said that adequate security will be fully in place at all the venues for the tournament, which is due to be staged in October and November.

FIFA had last month sought guarantees from the Nigerian Government that the event would not be marred by security problems amid continuing problems in Niger Delta.

Last month rebels in the area attacked a pumping station run by United States oil giant Chevron and warned FIFA against letting Nigeria host tournament later this year.

Members for Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) also threatened to extend their operations to other states in the oil-rich region.

Odikpo said: "FIFA sent their venue security assessment committee to Nigeria and they visited all the venues.

"They have written their report to FIFA and we in the LOC are expecting 98 per cent favoruable report."

Odikpo said that the Nigeria security agencies are in charge of security and are aware of this responsibility during the tournament.

He said: "The Nigeria security agencies will be in charge and there is no cause for alarm."

Amos Adamu, Nigeria's member of FIFA's ruling Executive Committee, also backed the country to put on a safe and spectacular show after meeting the country's Sports Minister Sani Ndanusa.

He said: "My opinion is the same with that of the Minister, who is the leader of this delegation.

"Our own is just to assist him to get the best for the country, so we will have memorable championship in terms of organisation and facilities."
