Opening of the ISU Congress in Las Vegas: ISU Vision 2030 presented

Opening day of the 59th Congress of the International Skating Union (ISU) in Las Vegas. The focus was on the ISU Vision 2030. This action plan was launched by the ISU Council last year. The ISU budget for the period 2024-2026 was also approved.

The ISU Vision 2030, which was presented by ISU President Jae Youl Kim, is a strategic roadmap based on five different thematic priorities that are to be implemented gradually by 2030. The keywords are growth, innovation, protection, development and unity.

Growth and improved fan loyalty are hoped for, among other things, through the introduction of new competition formats such as the ISU Short Track World Tour. Six World Cups in a season are to be bundled and made more attractive through show elements.

The hope is to generate more viewers and fans through improved broadcast experiences, including on a digital level. In addition, fans of figure skating, speed skating, short track and synchronised figure skating should be better integrated through a uniformed system.

Long-term economic growth is also planned. Revenues are to be diversified by the asset management working group in order to develop alternative investment strategies.

In its ISU Vision 2030, the world association also advocates improved protection for athletes. Protection and support measures are to be implemented in line with the already existing ISU protection policy in order to protect and promote the physical and mental well-being of athletes on and off the ice and to ensure fair competitions, it said. This includes an intensified fight against doping but also to counteract psychological pressure and stress on athletes, especially in figure skating.

Development programs are to be promoted in order to make the sport more visible worldwide. ISU President Kim said in his presentation to the 250 delegates from 65 countries, “The world is changing, and we must all be open to it.

"The Vision 2030 builds on these changes and articulates concrete long-term solutions to improve, innovate and engage. Our objective is to increase capabilities to better serve our athletes, Members and fans and make the necessary investments to unlock the full potential of our sport. Together, we are embracing an athlete-first, Member-focused and fan-centric approach to propel our sport to the future.”

In addition to the ISU Vision 2030, finances were also discussed at the start of the Congress. The ISU proposed a 20% increase in the annual membership fee to support members in developing and implementing initiatives to protect athletes in their own countries.

It is an initiative that was accepted by the ISU. The ISU Congress will continue on the second day with the meetings of the figure skating and speed skating sections. The deliberations will last until 14 June.
