Giorgi's latest appearance was in the second round of the Miami Open in March, where she was swiftly defeated in straight sets by world number one Iga Swiatek. There was no personal announcement of her retirement, though the FITP confirmed on Wednesday that he had hung her racket up for good.

One of Giorgi's four WTA tour victories included her Masters 1000 triumph at Montreal in 2021. She reached her career-high ranking of 26th in the world in October 2018. Her most notable performance in a Grand Slam tournament occurred with a quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon in 2018. Additionally, she advanced to the quarter-finals at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.

Giorgi came under the spotlight in January 2023 when she defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the Australian Open. She was accused of using a fake vaccine certificate to enter the country, something she instantly rebuffed.

"I just did all my vaccination in different places, so the trouble is hers, not me," she said. "So with that, I'm very calm. Of course, if not, I couldn't come here and play this tennis, I think."

Giorgi stated she received vaccinations from an Italian doctor as well as medical authorities in other countries during the Covid-19 pandemic. "Once (one vaccine from the doctor). The other vaccination, I did it in different kind of places, so it's what I'm trying to explain," the Italian added.

She had also garnered attention prior to the pandemic in May 2021, after her coach and father, Sergio, repeatedly argued with an umpire during his daughters' match against Sara Sorribes Tormo at the Italian Open. 

“It’s possible for you to stay around?” the umpire asked following the abuse. “Because Giorgi’s father is very mad and I would like to have someone (nearby).” The individual at the other end replied, "You got it." 

Throughout her career, Giorgi, known for her powerful strokes, has experienced fluctuations in performance. Despite reaching a career-high ranking of No. 26 in the world, she retires having last held the No. 116 position.
