Olympic Values Education Programme - training and school projects in Hungary. HOC

The Hungarian Olympic Committee (HOC) believes that by training educators, thousands of students will become familiar with the Olympic Values of Excellence, Respect and Friendship and eventually become active supporters of the Olympic Movement by following the same set of values.

The Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) was launched in Hungary in February as a result of cooperation between the HOC and the Hungarian Sports University (TF). In the first phase, a total of 336 educators from all over the country participated in the training in 14 workshops, with more than 220 schools and thousands of students across the country taking part in the programme.

The HOC hopes that through the educators who actively participated in the training, thousands of students will become familiar with the Olympic values of excellence, respect, and friendship, and eventually become active supporters of the Olympic Movement by following the same set of values.

The free, one-day, 10-hour, training aims to provide participating educators from all disciplines with an insight into Olympic education topics using diverse and modern teaching methods. It also prepares them to put the programme's teaching methods in their schools.

The practical training includes tasks such as simulated interviews with Pierre de Coubertin, discussion of case studies related to cheating, messages conveyed by mascot figures, the issue of peace, etc. One third of the training takes place in a gym, with the aim of putting theory into physically active practice.

Tamás Csányi, Head of the Department of Physical Education Theory and Teaching Methods at TF, and Lilla Szijj, Member of the Board of the Hungarian Olympic Academy, will provide the pedagogical leadership for the implementation of the project.

Ákos Cserny, Deputy Rector for Education at the Hungarian University of Sports Science, highlighted the importance of the cooperation between the two organisations and expressed his wish that educators would convey Olympic values, such as Olympism, the value of clean sport and the love of sport to students.

The participants were welcomed by Csaba Bartha, Operational Director of the Hungarian Olympic Committee and Director of the Research Centre for Training Theory and Methodology at TF. "For us, it was not a question to implement our Olympic education project in cooperation with the Hungarian University of Sports Sciences.

The popularity of the programme is evident by the fact that the maximum number of applications was filled within two days. We have worked hard and excellent materials were produced in terms of publications and methodology. The International Olympic Committee is making a lot of effort to reach out to young people in order to promote and accept the Olympic Movement and Olympic ideals," stated Bartha.

The HOC constantly monitored the training sessions and analysed the client satisfaction surveys. This fantastic journey has just come to an end and we are really pleased and filled with emotions and enthusiasm to move forward and pass on this unique philosophy and values to children and help them form their personalities.

All the participants received OVEP school project plans, which they will have to use in their schools back home and implement "Olympic Days", or "Olympic Weeks" as extra-curricular activities. These activities will be monitored and 500 students will be selected on the basis of their school projects to take part in the OQS4 OVEP Theme Event in Budapest on 20 June.
