Cuba's judo legend Idalys Ortíz and American fencer Lee Kiefer both won their fourth consecutive gold medals at the Pan American Games in Santiago.

The feat has only previously been achieved in judo by Ortíz's compatriot Driulis González at Mara del Plata 1995, Winnipeg 1999, Santo Domingo 2003 and Rio de Janeiro 2007.

Ortíz's winning streak goes back to Guadalajara 2011, but this is set to be her last Pan American Games as she has planned retirement after next year's Olympic Games in Paris.

The 34-year-old four-time Olympic medallist proved too strong for Colombia's Brigitte Carabali in the women's over-78 kilograms final, triumphing by hansoku-make after her opponent recorded three shidos at the Centro de Deportes de Contacto.

"For me, it’s a great merit, a great pride," Oritz said.

"I already held all the titles before this event, but every competition is a new challenge, and really, winning a medal at Paris 2024 is my next goal."

Moira Morillo of Dominican Republic and Brazil's Beatriz Souza took the bronze medals in the weight category.

On the first day of fencing at the Paralympic Training Centre in Santiago, reigning Olympic champion Lee Kiefer also made it four-in-a-row at the Pan American Games in the individual women's foil.

Kiefer dominated the competition throughout, underlined by her 15-6 victory against Canada's Eleanor Harvey in the final.

Another Canadian, Jessica Guo, and Brazil's Mariana Pistoia took the bronze medals.

In the other fencing event, Dylan French of Canada took individual men's épée gold with a 15-12 win against Chile's Pablo Núñez, Francisco Limardo of Venezuela and Alexandre Camargo of Brazil completing the podium.

It was a highly successful final day of individual judo competition for Cuba, who, as well as Ortíz, also earned golds through Ivan Felipe Silva and Andy Granda to take their tally in judo up to five.

Silva defended his men's under-90kg title, winning by direct hansoku-make against Brazil's Rafael Macedo, and Granda made it back-to-back men's over-100kg golds at the Games by ippon against Chile's Francisco Solis.

Brazil sealed a seventh judo gold of Santiago 2023 through Samanta Soares, who triumphed by waza-ari in the women's under-78kg final against Sairy Colon of Puerto Rico.

Canada's Shady Elnahas was the other judo winner today, the four-time Pan American champion winning a first Pan American Games gold medal in the men's under-100kg by ippon against Chile's Thomas Briceño.

Judo at the Pan American Games is set to conclude tomorrow with the mixed team event.

The first table tennis gold of Santiago 2023 went to Cuba at the Olympic Training Centre.

Daniela Fonseca and Jorge Campos claimed a dominant 11-8. 11-6, 11-7, 11-7 win in the mixed doubles final against Brazil's Bruna Takahashi and Vitor Ishiy.

Beaten semi-finalists Paulina Vega and Nicolás Burgos of Chile and Zhen Wang and Mo Zhang of Canada earned bronze medals.

Kiefer's success moved the United States onto 72 golds at the top of the medals table, and prosperous days for Brazil and Canada bumped Mexico down from second to fourth.

Brazil are second with 37 golds, followed by Canada with 35.

Mexico also have 35 gold medals, but have gone three days without topping a podium and their 22 silvers is 10 fewer than Canada.
