International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has challenged Lionel Messi to write more history by playing at Paris 2024.

The Argentine football great, considered among the best players of all time, won the FIFA World Cup in Qatar last year and boasts an Olympic gold medal from Beijing 2008.

Men's Olympic football tournaments often do not feature the best talent as it is an under-23 competition with only three overage players allowed, and top clubs are usually reluctant to release members of their squad.

However Bach, currently visiting Argentina, is keen to see the star forward appear in Paris alongside other big names such as France striker Kylian Mbappé.

The 36-year-old Messi is now playing in the United States for Inter Miami after a glittering club career in Europe which saw him score 672 goals for Barcelona.

He knows the French capital well after playing for Paris Saint-Germain following more than two decades in Spain.

"It would be fantastic if he could be here," Bach said to Argentine reporters.

"The Games are an ambition for many football stars, such as Mbappé.

"For Lionel Messi it would mean a chance to write history once again.

"He could be the only player in history to have two gold medals and a World Cup.

"I don't want to interfere in the decisions of the coach, but it would be a great opportunity for Messi.

"If he plays, Argentina would have a higher chance of winning the gold medal, it would be fantastic for football and the Olympic Games."

Argentina's Olympic coach Javier Mascherano had admitted last month that he would like to have Messi in his squad.

The side managed by the double Olympic gold medallist, including alongside Messi at Beijing 2008, has not yet booked its Paris 2024 spot and will need to come through the South American qualification tournament, scheduled for Venezuela in January and February.

One problem for Messi's Olympic ambitions is the 2024 Copa América which is scheduled for the United States between June 20 and July 14.

Messi will likely be an important part of the squad as Argentina defend their title, meaning he would play two tournaments in the same summer if selected for Paris.

The Paris 2024 men's football tournament is due to start only 10 days after the Copa América final, and held around France until August 10.

With 106 goals, Messi is the record goalscorer for Argentina and he also has the most caps with 178.

He won the UEFA Champions League four times with Barcelona, as well as La Liga 10 times.

Messi has also won the Ballon d'Or seven times.
