The British Ju Jitsu Association (BJJAGB) has submitted information as part of its bid to remain as a recognised national governing body for the sport and keep its public funding.

In August, Sport England, Sport Scotland, Sport Wales and Sport Northern Ireland unanimously decided to accept the findings of a recognition review into the BJJAGB and derecognise it.

The BJJAGB was given a deadline of October 1 to submit "relevant evidence and information" to show it is capable of meeting policy criteria in order to maintain its national governing body status.

This has now happened and the information is being reviewed.

Any decision to derecognise a governing body in the UK must be taken by all four of the home countries together.

"As such, the Boards of the four relevant organisations - Sport England, Sport Wales, Sport Northern Ireland and Sport Scotland - will convene in the coming weeks to discuss the information submitted," a statement said.

"We'll then communicate an outcome in due course."

Derecognition would mean that the BJJAGB would not be eligible for public funding.

A martial art, or any sport designated as high risk, cannot receive funding in England without a recognised national governing body, although the separate UK Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association also exists.

The review into the BJJAGB was launched in November after information was received regarding the "governance of the organisation and behaviour of individuals at the governing body".

It was found that the BJJAGB, which was formed in 1960, had not met six of the nine criteria for recognition.

An AGM was held by the BJJAGB in Chesterfield yesterday.

"The event was attended by 73 members of the BJJAGB," said the organisation's chairman Martin Dixon.

"The constitution, reporting structure, Board and Committee members were all accepted by the membership.

"There were also additional requests for further nominations for the Committee structures.

"The Board of Directors and Committee members would like to thank the membership of the BJJAGB for their wonderful support in 2023 and look forward to an even more successful year in 2024."
