Marc’Andria Maurizzi of France and Candela Francisco of Argentina won the International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Junior Championships in Mexico city.

Maurizzi at 16 and 17-year-old Francisco also became two of the youngest winners in the history of the competition.

The duo were unbeaten throughout the event with Maurizzi leaving it until the end.

Having drawn in the final two rounds, the French player faced tie breaks against Arseniy Nesterov of Russia, Luka Budisavljević of Serbia, and Mamikon Gharibyan of Armenia to win 8½/11.

Nesterov won silver thanks to an impressive last four matches, including victory over top seed Hans Niemman of the United States, who eventually finished in eighth.

Serbian Budisavljević, also unbeaten in the tournament, won the final podium spot.

Among girls, the top prize went to Francisco after she made a late push following round nine and finished with 8½/11.

Top seed American Carissa Yip was under control until she lost to 13-year-old sensation Miaoyi Lu of China in round nine.

Beloslava Krasteva of Bulgaria then went into the final round one point ahead of others before being outplayed by Francisco in final round.

In the end, Yip finished with silver and Krasteva bronze.
