Poreč in Croatia has here been awarded hosting rights for the next edition of the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) World Championships due to be held in 2025.

It is set to mark the first time Croatia has staged the ITF World Championships, and mark a return to the biennial cycle following on from this year's edition in the Finnish city of Tampere, which was delayed from 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During a presentation to delegates at the ITF Congress, Croatia promised reliable transport links to airports including Pula, Rijeka and Zagreb in Croatia, Trieste and Venice in Italy, Ljubljana in Slovenia and Graz in Austria.

Competition is set to be held at the 3,700-capacity Žatika Sport Centre, which was built as one of the venues for the 2009 International Handball Federation Men's World Championship.

The city has also hosted the European Archery Championships, Davis Cup tennis matches and events on the International Volleyball Federation Beach Volleyball World Tour, now the Beach Pro Tour, in recent years.

The Intersport Sport Hall in Poreč has also been reserved for daily training.

"There is no big sport event without a great organisational team," the Croatian ITF Taekwon-Do Association wrote in its presentation.

"But even this may not be enough to organise an event at the highest level.

"Therefore we can be confident, honoured and proud to have so many important people and organisations of Croatia supporting us on our way.

"Both local communities and Government institutions believe that the goal we have is the goal we deserve.

"ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships 2025 truly belongs to Poreč."

Poreč was the only candidate for the 2025 World Championships, and unanimously approved by the 57 voting countries in attendance with a margin of 127 votes to zero.

Croatian ITF Taekwon-Do Association President Slavko Jereb said it was a "great honour" for the country to host the World Championships.

"We had the European Championships in 2022," he told insidethegames.

"This will be a great success for the taekwon-do community, but also for WT [World Taekwondo, the governing body of Olympic-style taekwondo recognised by the International Olympic Committee] and ITF taekwon-do community.

"We are lucky to have the opportunity to organise such a big tournament.

"I hope that a lot of people will come, especially competitors of course, because the motto of this World Championships is 'family reunion', so we would like to have some kind of warm but professional competition."

The awarding of the 2025 World Championships means the ITF has secured hosts for its next three major events.

Next year's ITF Taekwon-Do World Cup, an international club competition, is set to be held in Mar del Plata in Argentina, followed by the 2026 edition in Ireland's capital Dublin.

The 2027 World Championships is the next available major event on the calendar, and Paraguay presented its interest to the Congress, although a decision is not due to be taken until a later date.
