Hosts Morocco finished top of the medals table at the African Karate Federation Championships in Casablanca with a haul of 17 golds.

Egypt had topped the table at the previous two editions of the continental championships, with Morocco hoping that the home fans could inspire them to reclaim it.

That proved to be the case thanks to their number of golds, 17 to Egypt’s 14.

Egypt finished second despite winning more total medals than the hosts - 37 to Morocco’s 33, across the senior, junior and cadet categories that were contested.

Among the home winners in the senior events were Aya En-Nesyry of Morocco who took the female kata title as she overcame Aya Hesham of Egypt, by a score of 41.4 to 41.2.

In the Female Kumite +68 kilograms category Morocco took gold thanks to Maroua Eddarhri, who beat Egyptian Shaaban Okila Menna 9-1.
