Brenda Gutierrez and José Eguia capped off a remarkable Mexican medal tally at the San Salvador 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games with canoe sprint victories on the final day of competition.

Gutierrez finished her time at the Presa El Rincón in style with a blistering performance in the women's kayak single 200-metres event.

She clocked in after 42.86sec to pip Cuban Yurieni Guerra to the title by 0.06 while Venezuela's Yocelin Canache rounded out the top three with a time of 44.29.

Eguia then replicated his compatriot's success as he prevailed in the men's kayak single 200m after 37.61 for gold.

The Dominican Republic's Alexander Concepcion and Ray Acuña of Venezuela then joined him on the podium in 37.80 and 38.87, respectively.

The conclusion of the final day saw Mexico top the overall medal standings with 145 golds, 108 silvers and 100 bronzes.

Colombia's 87 titles put them second while a total of 74 gold medals was enough to put Cuba in third.

There was more joy in store for the Mexicans in the mountain bike events as Daniela Campuzano clinched victory in the women's cross-country final.

The Lima 2019 Pan American Games champion posted a time of 1hour 20min 8sec at the Ecoparque El Espino to beat Costa Rican Adriana Marίa Rojas and Ana Marίa Roa of Colombia.

Jose Gerardo Ulloa failed to secure another win for Mexico in the men's cross-country as he finished behind Colombian champion Jhonnatan Botero's 1:16:51 by 0.54.

Crossing the line just over two minutes off the pace was Georwill Perez of Puerto Rico in 1:18:53.

Another narrow Mexican silver came in the men's under-84-kilograms karate division as Carlos Villareal fell to Freddy Valera of Venezuela.

The pair were level with two yuko each but the win went to Valera by way of hantei.

Pamela Rodriguez of the Dominican Republic triumphed in a tense affair against Colombian's Shanne Torres Doncell in the women's over-68kg final for gold.

Torres Doncell's compatriot Diego Lenis also suffered a defeat in the men's over-84kg decider to Anel Castillo of Dominican Republic 7-4.

Another Dominican Republic gold came at the Palacio de los Deportes Carlos el Famoso as the women's volleyball team beat Puerto Rico 25-19, 25-19, 25-16.
