Eight-time champions Mexico got their Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football Gold Cup campaign off to a flying start with a 4-0 thrashing of Honduras in Houston.

Luis Romo grabbed two goals, while Orbelín Pineda and Luis Chávez netted the others as Mexico swept aside Honduras in front of a crowd of 66,255 at the NRG Stadium in the American city.

It took Mexico just 53 seconds to open the scoring as Monterrey midfielder Romo fired home from outside the box.

Romo scored his second on the 22nd minute with a header from close range after being set up by Jesús Gallardo.

Mexico continued to control proceedings and went 3-0 up seven minutes into the second-half.

This time, Pineda got on the scoresheet after dribbling into the penalty area before slotting home.

Honduras had an opener to forget as they conceded a fourth and final goal on the 64th minute when Chávez struck.

The victory sees Trinidad and Tobago take the early lead in Group A ahead of the United States who needed a late goal to take a point from their match against Jamaica at Chicago's Soldier Field yesterday.

Jamaica went in front thanks to Damion Lowe’s 13th minute goal and were closing in a shock victory only for Brandon Vazquez to come to the reigning champion’s rescue.

With just two minutes left, Vazquez popped up to fire home from seven yards out to seal a 1-1 draw before 36,666 fans.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow with Group C matches between El Salvador and Martinique and Costa Rica and Panama in Fort Lauderdale.
