O'Farrill Bolaños formed a part of the renowned Cuban women's volleyball teams who won back-to-back Olympic golds.

The nation also won the women's volleyball tournament at Sydney 2000, although O'Farrill Bolaños was not part of that team.

Cuba won gold at Barcelona 1992 without losing a match, triumphing in four sets against the Unified Team in the final.

Atlanta 1996 also provided a four-set victory in the final against China, after Cuba progressed through the group stage with three wins and two draws before beating the United States and Brazil.

O'Farrill Bolaños was part of the team which dominated the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Women's World Championship in Brazil in 1994, with Cuba not dropping a set en route to gold.

The FIVB said it "extends its deepest condolences to the Cuban volleyball community, as well as her family and loved ones at this very difficult time".

O'Farrill Bolaños was part of the teaching staff at the University of Cuban Sport, which also offered its condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.

Legendary former team-mate Mireya Luis said "a beautiful person has died, an excellent woman, an excellent athlete", as reported by Cuban outlet 14ymedio.

A cause of O'Farrill Bolaños' death has not been announced.
