Organisers of the Munich 2022 European Championships have published a final report on sustainability, claiming the multi-sport event "created long-term effects at economic, environmental, and social levels" and showed Germany's potential as a host nation.

Highlights referenced in the report, which has been published in German, include the use of 97 per cent of existing sports infrastructure to stage the European Championships, the re-use of around 5,000 kilograms of banners and flag fabrics and 10,962 climate protection contributions made by spectators purchasing tickets.

It claimed more than 500,000 single-use bottles were saved through the installation of water dispensers and re-usable bottles, and "climate neutrality" was achieved by offsetting 8,699.84 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

The report suggested Germany had received a €349 million (£298 million/$375 million) through staging the European Championships, which featured nine sports.

Germany's Federal Minister of the Interior and Homeland Nancy Faeser argued the European Championships had provided a boost to the country's ambitions of hosting major sports events.

"With the European Championships 2022 in Munich, Germany has presented itself as an excellent host of sustainable major sporting events," she said.

"The event was an important milestone in the national strategy for major sporting events and is a model for the many future major sporting events in Germany as a sporting nation.

"The European Championships 2022 have shown that we are on the right track to establish Germany as a leading location for sustainable major sporting events."

A bid for the 2034 Winter or 2036 Summer Olympics and Paralympics is under consideration by Germany.

Germany has failed in five bids since it last staged the Olympics in Munich in 1972.

Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter insisted: "The topic of sustainability played a major role at the event and made a significant contribution to the fact that the event will remain in the hearts of Munich residents for a long time to come."

Munich 2022 was the second edition of the multi-sport European Championships.

A third edition is planned in 2026, although athletics looks set to not be part of the programme with its European Championships for that year already awarded to Birmingham in Britain.

Germany topped the medals table at Munich 2022, which was held from August 11 to 21.

Last month, the event won the venue and event prize at the SPOBIS GmbH Awards for Sustainability in Sport.
