Afghan ju-jitsu athlete Arezo Ahmadi was arrested after winning a gold medal at a tournament in Pakistan.

Ahmadi was detained while attempting to travel from the International Jiu-Jitsu Checkmate competition in Karachi to Islamabad.

According to Khaama Press, she was held for more than five hours for unknown reasons.

Some of the people she was travelling with were also detained.

Ahmadi defeated three opponents to win gold at the competition, which also attracted ju-jitsu fighters from the United States and Canada.

Pakistan police are said to have arrested hundreds of Afghan refugees in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and other major cities over the last few days.

This is for allegedly failing to provide valid stay permits and visas.

Ahmadi said she possessed a UNHCR immigration card.
