Guzi started seventh in the laser run at the National University of Public Service, 26 seconds behind her compatriot and World Championships silver medallist Michelle Gulyás.

Egypt's Haydy Morsy led from the fencing ranking round, but slipped out of medal contention during the riding.

Gulyás achieved maximum score in the riding, and produced the second quickest swimming time with 2min 13.69sec to complete the 200 metres.

Salma Abdelmaksoud of Egypt was closely in pursuit at just a 1sec disadvantage going into the laser run following a steady display in fencing, riding and swimming, with China's Zhang Mingyu just 5sec off the pace.

However, it was Guzi who was the star of the show, moving past two rivals on the first shoot and Zhang on the second run to put herself in contention.

She pushed hard on the fourth lap to significantly reduce the gap on the leaders going into the shooting range.

Gulyás looked to have the edge over her compatriot, but Guzi finished strong to secure a time of 11min 6.50sec in the laser run and her first World Cup gold medal.

Abdelmaksoud placed third with a run of 11:36.10, meaning Lithuania's two-time Olympic medallist Laura Asadauskaitė had to settle for fourth despite the second quickest laser run in 10:58.90.

In the men's final, Jun was dominant as he beat the Ankara World Cup winner Mohanad Shaban of Egypt, with Czech Republic's Martin Vlach finishing third thanks to a world record-breaking performance in the laser run.

Jun went into the laser run with a 5sec lead over Shaban, and the eighth quickest time of 10:14.20 was enough for him to triumph over his nearest challenger, who clocked 10:13.60.

Vlach beat his previous laser run world record time by more than 13sec with a 9:44.80 to overtake Seo Chang-wan of South Korea on the final strait.

Budapest represented Jun's ninth victory at a Pentathlon World Cup.

The mixed relay is due to be held tomorrow to conclude competition in the Hungarian capital.

Bulgaria's capital Sofia is due to host the last UIPM Pentathlon World Cup from May 9 to 14 before the Final in Turkey's capital Ankara from May 31 to June 4.
