A team of nearly 200 is expected to represent the Czech Republic at this year's European Games in Kraków-Małopolska in Poland.

The country revealed it was planning to compete in 26 sports at the third edition of the regional event scheduled to take place between June 21 and July 2.

This will include 46 in athletics at the European Team Championships, which have been absorbed to form part of the European Games.

A total of 89 athletes from the country have qualified so far across all sports.

"In total, we expect that there will be almost two hundred athletes," said Martin Doktor, the sports director of the Czech Olympic Committee.

"For a number of sports, this is part of the Olympic qualification, either with the possibility of directly fighting for places or gaining points for the ranking.

"For example, for boxing, it is the biggest qualifying tournament ever.

"Shooters, canoeists, modern pentathletes, archers and table tennis players will also fight for places.

"The winners of the rugby sevens tournaments will also secure a place in the Games, with the second and third teams going through to the qualifying tournament.

"We are pleased that we have both a women's and a men's team represented in this sport."

The Czech Republic shares a border with Poland so the country is hoping for a good turnout of support.

Kraków will be the main venue hub but sports will be spread out across the wider region.

"The European Games will also be interesting for the fans and the families and friends of the athletes as they are so close to the Czech Republic for the first time," Doktor added.

"For the first time, we will have representatives in beach soccer and other disciplines whose participation was not usual in the Czech team - such as sevens rugby.

"In addition, the European Games will be specific in that they take place in many places.

"For us, in terms of securing the event, it will also be training for the Games in Paris.

"Because, for example, shooters will be alone in Wrocław - similar to the Olympic Games in Chateauroux."

At the last European Games in Minsk in 2019, the Czech Republic sent a team of 123 athletes, who competed in 13 sports.

They won two gold medals thanks to shooter David Kostelecký in the men's trap and cyclist Tomáš Bábek in the men's kilo time trial.

Overall, the Czech Republic won a total of 13 medals, also adding five silver and six bronze.

Four years earlier, at the first European Games in Baku, Czech had won seven medals - two silver and five bronze.
