The Cambodian Wheelchair Basketball Federation (CWBF) has entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to promote the country's national team.

Both parties have agreed to complement each other's duties in supporting wheelchair basketball in Cambodia.

Wheelchair basketball is on the programme at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Para Games in Cambodia, scheduled for June 3 to 9 this year following the Southeast Asian Games.

CWBF President Ly Thuch and ICRC physical rehabilitation programme manager Marc Zlot signed the MoU at the ICRC's office in Phnom Penh.

Thuch thanked the ICRC for its support.

"I am deeply grateful to the ICRC for their generous support of the Cambodian wheelchair basketball team since 2012," he said, as reported by the Khmer Times.

"This sponsorship has inspired the team to be successful and I hope that our men's and women's teams will be able to bring home a gold medal when Cambodia hosts the 12th ASEAN Para Games in May 2023."

According to the newspaper, Zlot added: "ICRC looks forward to exploring together with CWBF avenues to increase social integration of persons with disabilities through wheelchair basketball sport.

"The signing of this MOU is the foundation to create a wheelchair basketball league in Cambodia and to promote social inclusion."

The ICRC created Cambodia's first wheelchair basketball team in 2012, and later established the CWBF.

Cambodia are the defending champions in wheelchair basketball at the ASEAN Para Games after winning their first gold medal in the sport in Surakarta in Indonesia last year.

This year's event is set to mark the first time it has been held in Cambodia.
