"The focus going forward will be the development of athletes in the groms [16 years and under] division who are the future of the sport and the women surfers," said SFI President Arun Vasu.

"This like any sport needs to be practiced from a young age.

"We already have a couple of very talented young athletes who along with the right training need the financial support so that their decision of pursuing a career as a professional surfer can be an easier one."

The team is currently in Sri Lanka attending a two-week training camp with its head coach Patrick Renaud.

The South African is a former professional surfer who previously managed the English surf team to fourth place in the European Championships.

India will be under his guidance for the next five months in the build up to the Games as they take part in further training camps and possible international competition in the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

It made its debut at Tokyo 2020 with two medal events - men's shortboard and women's shortboard.

Brazil’s Italo Ferreira and Carissa Moore of the United States won the men's and women's gold medals, respectively.

A total of 48 athletes are set to compete at the Paris 2024 competition in Tahiti, eight more than in Tokyo, with an equal split in the men's and women's events.

From the World Surfing Games, the four best-placed men and women from each continent will win quota places for next year's Olympics.
