Mazur was the first champion crowned at the Winter EYOF with her victory in the girls' 1500m race, leading a Polish one-two with Kornelia Woźniak at the Ice Arena Claudio Vuerich in Pontebba.

She clocked 2min 36.380 in the final, beating her compatriot by 0.124sec.

Hungary's Dora Szigeti was third, finishing 0.594 off the pace.

In the boys' 1500m final, Major delivered a dominant performance to triumph in 2:22.573.

His closest challenger Miika Johan Klevstuen of Norway finished 1.677 adrift, with Poland's Dominik Palenceusz in third 6.945 slower than Major with his time of 2:29.518.

European Olympic Committees President Spyros Capralos presented the first medals of the Winter EYOF to the athletes who finished on the podium.

The boys' and girls' ice hockey tournaments began today.

In the girls' tournament, being played at the Eis-Sport-Arena in the Austrian town of Spittal an der Drau, Austria were beaten 5-0 by Finland and Switzerland overcame Slovakia 4-3 in Group A, while Sweden drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic in Group B.

The boys' tournament is being held at the Fiera di Udine in the main host country of Italy.

Germany edged a thriller 5-4 against Finland in Group A, while Switzerland eased past Latvia 5-1 in Group B.

The Winter EYOF is due to continue tomorrow with medal events in cross-country skiing, Alpine snowboard, short track speed skating and ski jumping.
