Olympic kayak gold medallist Ken Wallace has been named Australia's Chef de Mission for next year's Pacific Games.

The Australia Olympic Committee (AOC) anticipates sending a team of roughly 75 athletes to compete in eight sports and has appointed Wallace to lead it.

Amy Hetzel Jones, an Olympic water polo medallist, will be his deputy.

Wallace was Chef de Mission at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa, as well as being a deputy at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

"This is a great opportunity for athletes to be part of a strong Australian multi-sport team culture on the world stage," Wallace said of Solomon Islands 2023.

"I'm looking forward to helping provide a supportive and inclusive team culture that will enable our athletes to perform at their best.

"With Paris 2024 quotas and world ranking points on offer, this will be a highly driven team, competing in the friendly spirit of the Pacific Games."

Wallace won K1 500 metres gold and K1 1,000m bronze at Beijing 2008, plus K2 1,000m bronze at Rio 2016.

The AOC plans to send archery, athletics, boxing, sailing, taekwondo and weightlifting athletes, plus beach volleyball and rugby sevens teams.

"Every athlete knows the importance of team culture and the right environment to producing your best performance," added Hetzel Jones, winner of an Olympic bronze medal at Beijing 2008.

"I'm thrilled to be part of the leadership team to help give Australian athletes the best chance to achieve their goals at the Pacific Games in 2023."

Australia is among the countries offering considerable financial support for the Solomon Islands' first-ever Pacific Games.

Manasseh Sogavare's tenure as Solomon Islands Prime Minister has been extended beyond the constitutional limit of four years after after he argued that the country cannot afford to hold the Pacific Games and a general election in the same year.

Following a delay blamed on COVID-19, the event now has dates of November 19 to December 2 in 2023.
