Poland's Rogalinska faced former European youth champion Antonia Giannakopoulou of Greece, with the fighters' sharing moments that could prove decisive.

However, the judges ruled that the 21-year-old Polish fighter just about edged her opponent, who is two years her junior, and Rogalinska came away with a 3-2 victory at the Mediterranean Sport Center.

Anastasiia Kovalchuk advanced to the quarter-finals after upsetting Porec 2022 European Men's and Women's Boxing Championships gold medallist Niamh Fay of Ireland.

The Ukrainian's triumph was far from convincing as she picked up a 4-0 win on decision.

Athletes from Ukraine may compete at International Boxing Association (IBA) and European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) competitions under their national flag, despite the IBA suspending the Ukrainian Boxing Federation for alleged "Government interference".

The same applies to athletes from Russia and Belarus - despite the countries waging a war in Ukraine which has led to them being excluded from most international sport - but the IBA decision allowing them to return came after the EUBC had closed the entry lists for the European Women's Boxing Championships.

Nevertheless, Ekaterina Sycheva, who previously represented Russia at the EUBC event, is now competing under the Armenian flag and has also progressed in the bantamweight category.

Her experience was too much for Georgia's Ana Khunjua and she swept her opponent 5-0.

Finland's Vilma Viitanen also recorded a whitewash win against Germany's Zeina Nassar.

Other bantamweight boxers to advance include Claudia Totova of Czech Republic, Bojana Gojkovic of Montenegro, Stanimira Petrova of Bulgaria and Jelena Zekic of Serbia.

Totova defeated Moldova's Lulia Coroli 4-0 while Gojkovic recorded a unanimous victory versus Spain's Mamen Madueño Conde.

Petrova also registered a unanimous triumph against Hungary's Beata Varga and Zekic overcame Sweden's Sara Svensson 3-0.

The competition is due to continue tomorrow and run until Saturday (October 22).
