Armenian capital Yerevan is scheduled to welcome sambo's rising stars at the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) World Youth, Junior and Cadets Sambo Championships tomorrow.

The three-day competition, which was initially set to take place in Panagyurishte in Bulgaria, is scheduled to see participants challenge for the crown of their respective weight class and age category at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex.

In anticipation of the event, FIAS President Vasily Shestakov is foreseeing that new elite athletes could make a name for themselves.

"For the first time in the history of the International Sambo Federation, combat sambo fights will be held among juniors," he said.

"This decision was made at a meeting of the FIAS Executive Committee after numerous appeals from National Federations, due to the growing popularity of combat sambo around the world.

"Perhaps it is at this tournament that a new star will shine, which in the future will be compared in popularity with such legendary athletes as Fedor Emelyanenko and Khabib Nurmagomedov."

The hosts are due to have representatives alongside Bulgaria, Colombia, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Georgia, Israel, Iceland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Korea, Latvia, Moldova, Mongolia, Romania, Serbia, Tajikistan, the United States and Uzbekistan.

Russia and Belarus are competing as neutrals under the FIAS flag.

The FIAS has taken a different approach to the majority of International Federations by not banning the two nations outright in response to the war.

Instead, it has suspended the Russian and Belarusian national flags, anthems and symbols, in addition to stripping the two nations of international events it sanctions.
