The alleged incident occurred on December 15.

Shin was accused of hitting the driver of his taxi, who had asked for the intended destination.

The 23-year-old had reportedly been drunk at the time of the incident, which was blamed on him suffering from anxiety attacks.

According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, the Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office filed a summary indictment last month.

The summary indictment is expected to see Shin fined, with the case determined via a written verdict rather than a formal trial taking place.

Yonhap reported the Korea Gymnastics Association has faced criticism for including Shin on the list of gymnasts competing at a selection event for the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.

The competition is scheduled to take place on April 10 at the Hongcheon Sports Complex in Gangwon-do.

The Korea Gymnastics Association is reportedly set to decide on Thursday (April 7), whether Shin will participate with the case ongoing.

The organisation removed Shin from consideration for a Sports Award prize in December, following the assault allegation.

The initial recommendation was made following Shin’s triumph in the men’s vault event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Shin won gold with an overall score of 14.783 in the final, following two vaults.

He triumphed on a tie-breaker with Russian Olympic Committee representative Denis Ablyazin finishing on the same total.

Shin’s higher individual score of 14.833 to Ablyazin’s 14.800 led to the South Korean being crowned as the winner.

Armenia’s Artur Davtyan finished third on an overall score of 14.733.

Shin was the second South Korean gymnast to win Olympic gold, following Yang Hak-seon's success in the vault event at London 2012.

Shin would be seeking to compete at the Asian Games for the first time in Hangzhou.

The Chinese city is set to host competition from September 10 to 25.
