Paralympic champion Lidiia Soloviova was among the winners as action began today at the World Para Powerlifting World Cup in Manchester.

The Ukrainian came out on top in the women's up to 50 kilograms category with a lift of 110kg at Wythenshawe Forum in the English city.

Spain's Loida Zabala Ollero was the silver medallist with 95kg, while Great Britain's Olivia Broome took the bronze with 94kg.

There was also success for Ukraine in the women's up to 55kg category, which saw Mariana Shevchuk triumph with a lift of 115kg.

Chile's Camila Campos was the runner-up with 108kg and the podium was rounded off by Morocco's Najat El Garraa with 100kg.

The first gold medallist of the day was Britain's Zoe Newson, winner of the two-competitor women's up to 41kg event with a lift of 88kg.

Ukraine's Kseniia Tokar finished second with 62kg.

Today's one other female champion was Kazakhstan's Gulim Kurmanbayeva, beating Ukraine's Daria Kobylynska to the women's up to 45kg crown with a lift of 80kg to her sole rival's 60kg.

In the men's up to 49kg category, Azerbaijan's Parvin Mammadov prevailed with a lift of 146kg in the first round and was followed in the standings by Britain's Adam Alderman with 140kg and Japan's Tetsuo Nishizaki with 133kg.

The event, due to continue tomorrow, is part of the qualification process for this year's Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
