Hosts United States and title holders Iran both made unbeaten starts to their United World Wrestling (UWW) Freestyle World Cup campaigns, picking up two Group B victories each on the opening day of action at The Forum in Los Angeles.

The Americans opened with a 7-1 victory over India with world bronze medallist James Green and world champion Kyle Snyder earning technical fall shutout victories at 70 kilograms and 97kg respectively.

They followed this up with an 8-0 victory over Azerbaijan, outscoring their opponents 57-8.

Green picked up his second 10-0 technical victory, while Alex Dieringer - filling in for Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs who announced yesterday that he was pulling out of the event to be present for the birth of his second child - defeated Ashraf Aliyev 8-0 at 74kg.

J'den Cox claimed his second victory of the day at 86kg, stunning world number three Alexander Taymurazovic Gostiev 3-2.

The home nation closed out the meet with victories from Snyder and Olympic champion Jake Varner at 125kg.

"I felt really good about how many points our guys put up on the scoreboard," said US coach Bruce Burnett.

The US’s final Group B game tomorrow morning sees them go up against four-time defending champions Iran, who beat Azerbaijan 5-3 before going on to crush India 8-0.

The Iranians won four of their first five matches against Azerbaijan to go 4-1 up, and although their opponents battled back to win the next two, world number six Komeil Ghasemi closed out the contest with a hard-fought 6-4 victory.

Seyedahmad Seyedmahmoud Mohammadipahnehkolaei, Hassan Aliazam Yazdanicharati, Alireza Mohammad Karimimachiani, and Amir Mohsen Mohammadi all earned technical fall victories against India at the respective weights of 65kg, 74kg, 86kg and 97kg.

The encounter between the US and Iran will be a repeat of last year’s final with a place in the gold medal match at stake.

In Group A, Russia were the sole country to finish the opening day with two victories, edging Georgia 4-4 on criteria and then overcoming Mongolia 6-2.

The final placement matches are due to take place tomorrow following the final group stage matches.
