Gibraltar has been encouraged to bid for the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Louise Martin, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), claimed they would be strong contenders if they decided to put themselves forward.

The British Overseas Territory had already explored the possibility of bidding for the 2021 Commonwealth Youth Games but that event is expected to be awarded to Northern Ireland.

They would follow the Bahamas, who were yesterday officially awarded the 2017 event following the withdrawal last September of St. Lucia.

The CGF, though, are looking for a candidate for the 2023 edition of the Games and has been impressed by the organisation displayed during a meeting of the Executive Board, which finished here today.

"The passion for sport in Gibraltar has come across during the few days we have been here," said Martin.

Gibraltar is already due to host the 2019 Island Games, an event expected to attract 3,000 athletes from 24 countries and territories competing in 14 sports.

In contract, the Commonwealth Youth Games would involve 1,000 athletes from 71 countries and territories taking part in up to nine sports.

"The 2019 Island Games could be Gibraltar's test event," said Martin.

"Prove you can go be successful and go for the Commonwealth Youth Games."
