Barrick Gold Corporation will supply the metals used for medals at Toronto 2015 ©Barrick Gold CorporationToronto 2015 has announced Barrick Gold Corporation has been named official metal supplier of the Pan American and Parapan American Games and  will supply all the raw materials used to make the more than 4,000 gold, silver and bronze medals that will be awarded at the Games next year.

The raw materials provided by Barrick will be melted down and struck by The Royal Canadian Mint, who are designing and producing the medals in collaboration with Toronto 2015.

"Barrick is one of Canada's most well-known and successful global companies with deep roots working in the Pan American region," said Saäd Rafi, chief executive of Toronto 2015.

"We're pleased to welcome them on board as our official metal supplier."

The material to be used for the medals will be sourced from Barrick mines throughout the Pan American region.

The Toronto-based firm, listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 1985, has 14 operations in six Pan American countries, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Dominican Republic, Peru and the United States.

"Barrick and all of its people are excited to supply the metals that will become the treasured symbols of the dedication, teamwork and excellence that will be on display in Toronto at the Games," said Barrick Co-President Jim Gowans.

"These are values we share at Barrick and try to live every day.

"Next summer's Games will be a great opportunity to bring the Americas together, celebrate our shared values and learn from our differences, all while enjoying more than three weeks of athletic excellence."

The Toronto 2015 Pan American Games are due to take place from July 10 to 26, while the Parapan American Games are scheduled for August 7 to 15.
