Men's singles top seed Alcaraz advanced to the fourth round for the second time in his career with a commanding performance against Canada's Denis Shapovalov.

He earned a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 result after a two-hour 12-minute showdown.

A quarter-finalist last year in the French capital, Alcaraz will face Italy's Lorenzo Musetti next as he bids to go one step further.

Alcaraz extended his formidable win-loss record this season to 33-3 with the triumph.

"I felt great," the 20-year-old said after the tie.

"I think I played a good level the whole match.

"In the second set I was in trouble a bit at 4-1 down.

"I started to make more mistakes but you had to be strong mentally.

"I knew he would harm my chances in the second set and I had to come back and I did.

"I am happy with my level today and I hope to take this level into the next round."

In the women's singles, second seed Sabalenka posted a new career-best result at the Grand Slam by defeating neutral athlete Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia 6-2, 6-2 to move into the round of 16 for the first time.

She was remarkable on the serve, winning 81 per cent of her first service points and smashing six aces.

It was her 32^nd win of the year which leads all players on the women's tour.

Sabalenka will meet the United States' Sloane Stephens in the next round.

The 2017 US Open champion got the better of Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to progress.

Sabalenka and Stephens' meeting will be the first on clay, while the former currently leads the head-to-head record with three wins to nil.
