The Moroccan created a ferment in the Stadium as he finished more than eight seconds clear of a world class field, with Ethiopia's Get et Wale and Abraham Kibiwott of Kenya recording respective personal bests of 8:05.15 and 8:05.51 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

World 100 metres champion Fred Kerley, deprived of the chance to meet Marcell Jacobs for the first time since he beat him to the Olympic title due to the Italian pulling out three days before the Rabat Diamond League meeting with a back problem, won as he pleased in a meeting record of 9.94sec.

He was followed home by South Africa's Akani Simbine in 9.99 and Kenya's Commonwealth champion Ferdi and Omanyala in 10.05, with Botswana's double world under-20 champion Letsile Tebogo fourth in 10.09.

With Jacobs absent, saying "the challenge is only postponed", and due to meet Kerley at the next Diamond League in Florence on June 2, the needle in this meeting was principally between Norway's Olympic 1500m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen and American challenger Yared Nuse, who has set indoor area records over 1500m, 3,000m and the mile this year.

Ingebrigtsen won in 3:32.59, with Nuse second in a personal best of 3:33.02 and his training partner Oliver Hoare of Australia third in 3:33.39.

Double world high jump silver medallist Yàroslava Mahuchikh, the first woman to clear 2.00m this outdoor season, duly became the first to record 2.01m as she finished 10cm clear of Ukrainian compatriot Iryna Getrashchenko.

In the women's triple jump Ukraine's European champion Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk had to settle for second place on 14.58m behind Cuba's Leyanis Perez Hernandez, whose personal best of 14.84m is the best recorded so far this season.

Jamaica's world 200m champion Shericka Jackson set a meeting record of 21.98sec.

Kenya's Commonwealth champion Mary Moraa won the women's 800m in 1:58.72.

 Slovenia's world discus champion Kristjan Ceh threw 70.32m to defeat Sweden's Olympic champion Daniel Stahl, who had a best of 69.21m.

Double world 110m hurdles champion Grant Holloway finished ahead of the Jamaican who beat him to the Olympic title in Tokyo, Hansle Parchment, clocking 13.12sec to his rival's 13.24.

But both were beaten by Jamaica's Commonwealth champion Rasheed Broadbell who won in 13.08. 

Devon Allen of the United States, back on track after his exertions for National Football Leaguers Philadelphia Eagles, was fourth in 13.25.

World indoor 1500m record holder Gudaf Tsegay broke the meeting record of 3:55.47 set in 2019 by fellow Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba as she finished more than three seconds clear in 3:54.03.

Emanuel Wanyonyi won the men's 800m in 1:44.36 from his Kenyan compatriot Wyclife Kinyamal, who clocked 1:44.73.
