With their additional three silver and two bronze medals, Egypt secured the team title with 215 points.

Hosts Tunisia finished second with 173, while Algeria took third place with 129.

This performance marked another step up for Egypt, which won four golds and earned a total of 195 points in last year's edition.

Two of their gold medallists from 2022 successfully defended their titles on the last day.

One was Amr Hussen, who retained his 74kg title, his third African title in all, by defeating Bacar Ndum of Guinea-Bissau, last year’s 70kg champion, with a fall in the final match.

The second was Mostafa Elders, who earned a 3-2 win over home wrestler Mohamed Saadaoui in a fiery 97kg gold medal match.

Saadaoui, who had beaten Elders 9-5 in the morning session, led 2-1 with 50 seconds remaining before the Egyptian wrestler executed a double leg attack when the home athlete was close to the zone.

That resulted in a pushout that put Elders into the lead.

The home athlete challenged the call, claiming he had been head-butted, but the reviews confirmed it was clean and Elders held on to win.

Saadaoui made his feelings clear with an "aggressive push" on his opponent after the bout.

At 70kg, two bronze medallists from 2022, Said Elgahsh of Egypt and Mohamed Zorgui of Tunisia faced off in the gold medal bout this year with the former emerging victorious by 8-2.

Ahmed Mahmoud of Egypt won gold at 79kg by stunning the defending champion Chems Fetairia of Algeria with an 11-0 win.

The fifth Egyptian gold came in the 125kg category where two-time Olympian Diaaeldin Abdelmottaleb defeated Hamza Rahmani of Tunisia by a fall in the final.

But the host nation had two golds to celebrate thanks to Farouk Jelassi and Imed Kaddidi.

Jelassi, who had never previously won a medal at the African Championships, surprised many by claiming gold in the 65kg category with a 10-3 win over South Africa’s Frederik Nortje.

For Kaddidi, it was a significant breakthrough as he finally claimed the gold medal in the 92kg class after two previous silvers, with silver on this occasion going to Egypt’s Mahmoud Ibrahim.

Algeria also celebrated two gold medals as Abdelhak Kherbache and Fateh Benferdjallah successfully defended their titles.

Kherbache faced home wrestler Firas Khalifa in the 61kg category and won 6-3 to secure his fourth consecutive title.

Tokyo 2020 Olympian Benferdjallah added another African gold medal to his collection with a controlled 8-4 victory over Egypt’s Saifeldin Elkoumy in the 86kg weight class.

At 57kg, Diamantino Iuna Fafe of Guinea Bissau won gold after a thrilling final against Egypt's defending champion Gamal Mohamed, getting the verdict after an 8-8 scoreline.
