Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan Farid Gayibov has hinted that the country is "interested" in hosting more multi-sports events in the future.

Azeri capital Baku has hosted multi-sport events in the past, including the inaugural European Games in 2015.

It also staged the Islamic Solidarity Games in 2017 and the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2019.

Gayibov said that the country is always exploring possibilities to host more sporting events.

"We are planning for more world and European Championships at the moment," he told insidethegames.

"Maybe in the future, yes.

The first Universiade [International University Sports Association Summer World University Games] that is available is 2031, I think? We want to look into that.

"But it depends. Nothing is confirmed yet but of course we are always interested."

The National Gymnastics Arena here, where the 2023 European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships is taking place, was also announced as the host of the 2027 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships recently.

Baku previously hosted the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in 2005 and 2019.

The city has also staged the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships five times - 2007, 2009, 2014, 2019 and 2023.

Gayibov, who is also the President of European Gymnastics, has said that they are also looking at the staging a World Championships in artistic gymnastics.

The 44-year-old said that these sports events are making Baku popular with tourists, while volunteers are gaining valuable exposure.

"It is good for sports in the country but also brings a lot of tourists.

"Our volunteers are benefitting a lot.

"They have been able to travel outside for events as well after gaining experience from the home events."

Gayibov said the one thing he is not worried about is the lack of facilities in Azerbaijan.

The Baku Olympic Stadium, Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex and Aquatic Palace, to name a few, were venues for the 2015 European Games and are well maintained till date.

But budget and other aspects will have to be considered before bidding for a huge event, according to Gayibov.

"Nothing is on the agenda for the moment.

"But we are looking at multi-sport events.

"It depends on many situations.

"Obviously, budget is one of the main aspects.

"We have the facilities here.

"We are always looking to host multi-sport events."
