There was just one goal separating the two sides going into the last 20 minutes of this Group A match before Finland finished with a flourish to send Hungary crashing to another heavy defeat in front of a crowd of 11,547 at the Nokia Arena in the Finnish city.

Mikko Lehtonen grabbed the opener for co-hosts Finland inside the first 13 minutes before Kaapo Kakko scored at the start of the second period.

Hungary hit back with a goal from Balazs Sebok but any hopes of victory were blown away in a one-sided third period

Atte Ohtamaa, Teemu Hartikainen, Kasperi Kapanen, Walterri Merela and Joel Armia all scored to condemn Hungary to a second straight 7-1 defeat having lost by the same scoreline to Sweden.

The other Group A match saw Germany make it back-to-back victories with a 4-2 triumph against Austria at the Nokia Arena.

Nico Sturm and Parker Tuomie scored either side of a goal from Bernd Wolf to put Germany 2-1 in front in the opening period.

Germany increased their lead with a strike from Wojciech Stachowiak on the half-hour mark.

Lukas Haudum got another goal back for Austria before Sturm completed his brace to seal victory for Germany.

Finland's victory takes them to third in third place in the Group, while Germany are in fifth with Denmark currently in the last quarter-final place in fourth.

Denmark are due to meet the Group leaders the United States tomorrow.

Finland will be confident of another victory as they are scheduled to take on bottom-placed Austria.

Sweden, currently in second in the Group behind the US, are set to meet France. 

Co-hosts Latvia registered a third straight win in Group B with a 3-2 success against Slovenia in front of 9,180 spectators at the Arena Riga.

Rihards Bukarts opened Latvia’s account after just 11 minutes before Slovenia responded with a goal from Anze Kuralt seven minutes into the second period.

Latvia forged into a 3-1 lead courtesy of goals from Kaspars Daugavins and Bukarts.

Miha Verlic netted Slovenia’s second but they were unable to find a third as Latvia held firm in the third period to secure victory.

The second Group B match of the day saw Kazakhstan overcame Slovakia 4-3 after triumphing in the shootout.

Kazakhstan’s goals came from Roman Starchenko, Valeri Orekhov and Yevgeni Rymarev while Slovakia replied with strikes from Patrik Koch, Richard Panik and Pavol Regenda.

Kirill Savitski, Rymarev, Batyrlan Muratov and Nikita Mikhailis then all converted in the shootout as goaltender Andrey Shutov saved shots from Marek Hrivik and Robert Lantosi to seal the win.

Latvia and Kazakhstan are due to meet tomorrow on a day when the match of the day sees Group leaders Switzerland, winners of their opening four matches, take on second-placed Canada. 

Third-placed Czech Republic are scheduled to meet Norway.
