South Korea and North Korea are set to battle it out in the women’s football qualifiers for next year’s Olympics in Paris.

The neighbouring countries, which remain technically at war amid ongoing political tensions, have been drawn in the same group in the second round of the Asian qualifiers.

China, the silver medallists at Atlanta 1996, have been named as host of Group B that also features Thailand.

South Korea and North Korea are set to meet on October 29.

The two sides were due to face each other in the third round of qualifying for Tokyo 2020 only for North Korea to pull out of the tournament in South Korea.

North Korea played at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 whereas South Korea have never qualified for an Olympic women’s football tournament.

South Korea have won just one of their 15 encounters with North Korea, with the last meeting coming in 2017 and ending in a 1-1 draw.

The official draw for the second round of the Asian qualifiers was held at the Asian Football Confederation House in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

Australia, who reached the bronze-medal match only to lose to the United States at Tokyo 2020, are set to host Group A matches.

They have been pitted against Chinese Taipei, the Philippines and Iran.

"To find out what our path to Paris 2024 looks like provides much welcome clarity as to the task at hand, and we are excited to begin our campaign on home soil with the support of our amazing fans," said Australian head coach Tony Gustavsson.

Group C will be hosted by Uzbekistan who have been drawn against top seeds and London 2012 silver medallists Japan as well as Vietnam and India.

Matches in all three groups are set to be held from October 26 to November 1.

The three group winners and the best-ranked runners-up are set to progress to round three to play two pairs of home and away matches, scheduled to be staged on February 24 next year.

The eventual winners will take the two spots reserved for Asia for Paris 2024.
