Grandmaster (GM) Fabiano Caruana of the United States has won the Superbet Chess Classic at the Grand Hotel Bucharest to claim a first prize of $100,000 (£79,883/€91,880).

Caruana drew his last match of the tournament with fellow GM Richard Rapport of Hungary but was confirmed as the tournament victor with a score of 5.5/9 points.

Rapport was one of four main challengers who also drew for a share of second place on 5.0/9.

Alireza Firoujza of France was unable to force a victory against his compatriot Maxime Vachier Lagrave.

Wesley So of the United States drew with Poland’s Jan-Krzysztof Duda, his eighth consecutive draw.

Anish Giri of the Netherlands also ended with only half a point against World Championship runner Ian Nepomniachtchi when victory would have forced a play-off with Caruana.

All four claimed $42,750 (£34,150/€39,280) from the prize fund.

Earlier in the week, Caruana, a World Championship challenger in 2018 had broken away from the pack with successive victories including his first career victory against Nepomniachtchi.

China's new World Champion Ding Liren could only place eighth overall though he did at least win his final match of the tournament against Bogdan Daniel Deac from home nation Romania.

Ding had lost earlier in the week to Firoujza and Giri and has pulled out of the next event in Warsaw on Sunday (May 21) when the tour continues with rapid and blitz events.

Ding will be replaced by America's Levon Aronian.
