Switzerland’s Marlen Reusser produced a superb finish on the final stage to clinch overall victory in the International Cycling Union (UCI) Women's WorldTour Itzulia Women's race in San Sebastian.

Reusser won the final stage 2mins 38secs ahead of her SD Worx team-mate Demi Vollering of the Netherlands which meant she also clinched the general classification to win overall in a time of 9hours 57min 24sec, a total margin of 1:50 over Vollering in 9:59:14.

Katarzyna Niewiadoma of Poland, riding for Canyon-SRAM, was third overall in 10:00:23, with Canada’s Olivia Barel of UAE Team ADQ placing fourth in 10:00:24.

It left last week’s Vuelta Femenina winner Annemiek van Vleuten of the Netherlands back in fifth in a time of 10:00:31 in what is likely to be her final appearance in the Basque country.

Vollering, who was Itzulia Women champion in 2022, had won all the preceding stages and held a 56-second lead going into the final stage, but Reusser attacked decisively with 13 kilometres remaining in the 114.8km stage to clinch victory.

"I think somehow we both won today," Reusser admitted.

"I have to say it is a special gift from Demi because when we discussed our team tactics in the meeting, we said 'do we just defend our GC one-two?' We decided that's not Team SD Worx.

"We wanted to force the other teams to react and we wanted to act.

"I asked Demi if she would be OK if this would lead to a change in the general classification so I would win and she would be second and she said yes."

Reusser waited to embrace her team-mate at the finish.

"Every stage I was on the podium together with Marlen, so I am super happy that she takes the last stage and the overall win," Vollering said.

"When someone from Team SD Worx wins, we all win."

Reusser has pledged her support for her teammate later in the season.

"This year at the Tour de France we go all in for our Demi," she promised.

Racing on the UCI Women's WorldTour continues with the Vuelta a Burgos which is set to begin on Thursday (May 18).
