Fumio Demura, karate icon and movie populariser of martial arts, has died aged 84 ©WKF

Fumio Demura, who is credited with popularising martial arts through his career in films such as The Karate Kid, has died aged 84.

The World Karate Federation has said it is "deeply saddened" to learn of Demura’s passing, describing him as "a legend of karate and one of the most influential martial art masters of the last decades."

A WKF release said: "In addition to his contribution to the development of karate through countless books and scholarly work, Mr Demura took martial arts to high levels of popularity through his career in movies."

The Japanese martial arts expert was the stunt double and inspiration for the character of Mr Miyagi in the film franchise The Karate Kid.

Mr Miyagi. played by actor Pat Morita, is an unassuming repairman who is also a martial arts master and who takes Daniel, the title character, under his wing after he has been bullied, turning him into The Karate Kid.

Demura participated in the meeting of Japanese Karate masters which was held in Los Angeles  in October 2022 to mark the launch of the “Guardian Girls Karate Project”.


At the event hosted by the Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles, Demura discussed the situation of karate around the world with WKF President Antonio Espinós.

"It is with great sadness that we learn of Sensei Fumio Demura’s passing," Espinós said.

"He was one of the greatest icons of karate and a true pioneer of martial arts."

Espinós added: "His contribution to spreading karate around the world through his participation in movies made him one of the greatest ambassadors for karate worldwide.

"He will be truly missed.”

The WKF and the global karate family have extended their deepest condolences to Demura’s family and loved ones "during this difficult time" following his death on April 24.
