Camacho, a past President of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee, spoke about his new role on the Trinidad radio station i95.5FM and revealed that Commonwealth Games Federation President Dame Louise Martin had asked him to step into the role.

"She really did say to me, Douglas you should take the chair," Camacho disclosed.

"So they kind of pulled me out and said take it and try and see us over the end and I have every confidence that we will."

Camacho replaces Trinidad and Tobago Commonwealth Games Association vice-president Ephraim Serette as head of Trinbago 2023.

He admitted that his predecessor had been placed under a lot of pressure.

"We were certainly burdening him unduly because you know Ephraim has a lot of experience working in the public sector - he really was ideal to hold the fort," Camacho admitted.

Serette had led Trinbago 2023 for a year and will still have an important role to play within Trinbago 2023.

“I am going to be leaning on him heavily because the reality is, I physically will not be here for the Games," Camacho revealed.

"It is not a problem for me in that regard, all the members of the team are colleagues I have worked with over the years in one hat or the other."

Serrette had previously been special advisor to Trinidad and Tobago Sports Minister Shamfa Cudjoe and is to continue what has been described as "critical development."

The Games are set to include four sports on Trinidad and three on Tobago.

"If you look at the athletes in total, it is very evenly balanced and you have to remember as a country, when you are hosting 72 countries with a Games of this magnitude, just the athletes and officials are a few thousand," Camacho added.

The 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games are scheduled to run from August 4 to 11.
