Olympic champion Carissa Moore claimed her second victory of the World Surf League (WSL) season with success at the Margaret River Pro in Western Australia.

The American saw off home favourite and two-time world champion Tyler Wright to win the event for the third time in her career.

Scores of 5.00 and 6.10 points saw Moore triumph by 11.10 to 9.17 against Wright, who was unable to back up her victory at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach with another win.

Moore’s success in Western Australia also saw her climb to second in the overall women’s standings behind Wright.

"It was a crazy week and a crazy month being away from home, it’s a roller coaster," said Moore in a report by Cave Mag.

"Coming here, the doubts were starting to creep in.

"But, I really felt the love and the joy from this community and I want to say thank you because I couldn’t have done it without that good energy.

"I didn’t see Tyler’s wave so I thought I might have wasted my opportunity, but I just thought it’s up to the universe at this point."

The men’s title was won by Brazil’s Gabriel Medina in impressive fashion.

Medina defeated compatriots WSL leader João Chianca and reigning champion Filipe Toledo before overcoming American Griffin Colapinto in the final.

The Brazilian produced a near-perfect score of 9.50 before earning 8.00 as he defeated Colapinto by 17.50 to 12.27.

"It’s pretty special to win here," said Medina.

"It’s a venue where I’ve struggled to make heats.

"It felt good to have good waves and get the win.

"I’m feeling better now just feeling like I’m in the rhythm again.

"Griff and I always have good battles.

"I love competing against the guys, and that’s what we’re here for.

"It’s a really hard wave to surf, and I’m happy with my improvement."

The next WSL event is due to start on May 27 in Californian city Lemoore.
