"Ongoing conflicts, persecution and climate change continue to force millions of people from their homes," European Olympic Committees President Spyros Capralos said. 

"When they settle in new countries, sport is more than just a tool for integration, it can help to escape trauma, it can give athletes a focus and sense of purpose, help them rebuild their lives, create social networks and much more."

The EOC Refugee Team in Kraków-Małopolska is set to have five members.

Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin, now living in Germany, is set to compete in the women’s under-62 kilogram category in taekwondo.

A gold medallist at the Youth Olympics in 2014, she won Olympic bronze for Iran at Rio 2016 but competed at the Tokyo Games for the Refugee Olympic Team finishing fifth in featherweight.

Dina Pouryounes Langeroudi, also Iranian born but now resident in the Netherlands was part of the same team in Tokyo where she finished 11th in the flyweights.

She is expected to take part in the 46kg category in Kraków-Małopolska.

Kasra Mehdipournejad, another who has settled in Germany is to compete in the men’s under-89 kilogram class.

He won the Belgian and Dutch Opens in 2018.

In boxing, Farid Walizadeh is set to compete in the men’s under-57 kilograms category.

Originally from Afghanistan, he was separated from his family as a child but eventually settled in Portugal.

Cindy Ngamba, born in Cameroon, is trying to resolve her status in Britain but is set to box in the women’s under-66kg section.

They are all among the 56 refugee athlete scholarship holders hoping to be selected for the Olympic Refugee Team for Paris 2024.

Refugee athletes have taken part in continental competitions in individual sports but this is set to be the first time in a continental multi-sport event.

The European Games are set to take place from June 21 to July 2.
