Utah’s bid leader has endorsed Stockholm’s credentials as a potential host city for the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Salt Lake Utah Committee for the Games President Fraser Bullock welcomed a positive opinion poll indicated that "seven out of 10 Swedes, think that Sweden should apply for the Olympics and Paralympics in 2030 if the feasibility study shows that it is possible to implement sustainable, democratic and cost-effective Games.

The poll had been conducted for the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) by Kantar Public earlier this month and interviewed some 3,300 respondents.

"We are hoping there is a strong, viable host for 2030, which would allow us to focus exclusively on our bid for 2034, our preferred choice," Bullock told Salt Lake City newspaper Deseret News.

“Sweden would be a great host of a future Games, it is a country with a rich tradition of winter sport but has yet to host Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games."

Bullock, the chief operating officer the last time Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002, described the poll as "a key step in becoming a future host."

A Swedish feasibility study was launched in February and updates are expected to be given to the Swedish Paralympic Committee and  Swedish National Sports committee at their meetings next month.

The study is expected to be complete by July 1, after which a decision on bidding will be made.

The Japanese city of Sapporo, Winter Olympic hosts in 1972, had originally been the favourite to host the 2030 Games, but put their bid on hold last year as details of bribery surrounding Tokyo 2020 were revealed.

They believed likely to concentrate a bid on 2034, although opinion polls have appeared to point to significant opposition.

Vancouver’s First Nations-led bid 2030 faltered because of a lack of support from the British Columbia Government.

A bid from Switzerland is also considered a possibility after Lausanne's successful staging of the Youth Olympics in 2020.

Salt Lake City has indicated that it would host the 2030 Winter Olympics if there is no other viable alternative, but has made it clear it would prefer to stage them again in 2034 to avoid a potential clash with the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

In 2019, Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo polled 47 votes to 34 to defeat Stockholm's bid with Åre for the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Sweden has won 176 medals, including 65 gold at the Winter Olympics, putting them in the top seven performing nations, but they have never hosted them, despite having bid eight times.

Stockholm did stage successful Summer Olympic Games in 1912 and served as host for the equestrian events in 1956 after quarantine laws forced their removal from Melbourne in Australia.
