The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) have voted in favour of athletes from Russia and Belarus competing in international competitions despite the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Members of the Executive Committee of ANOCA voted unanimously in favour of this proposal at their 59th Ordinary Session in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach says he feels the time has come for the readmission of Russian and Belarusian athletes into international sport to be considered, with Mustapha Berraf, President of ANOCA, saying the organisation believes "politics cannot put pressure on sport."

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 2022, with the one-year anniversary of the conflict passing without any sign of it ending.

Belarus, a close ally of Russia, were supportive of the invasion, as they allow Russian Forces to train in their territories.

This has caused plenty of companies around the world to cut ties with both countries in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

The concept of participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes would be that they will be neutral competitors, with ANOCA saying "it will thus be a question of allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in complete neutrality without any sign of identity in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games."

ANOCA expressed its wish for world peace, adding that athletes should not be affected by the conflict.

Last week ANOCA's Executive Committee said it "unanimously supported" the participation of Russia and Belarus at all sporting events.

The Paris 2024 Olympics are due to take place from July 26 to August 11, with over 10,000 athletes expected to compete.
